This is what European Commissioner Oliver Vargei said at the plenary session of the European Parliament, dedicated to considering the role of Belarus in Russia’s war against Ukraine, reports the news agency Ukrinform on Thursday, October 20.
“In addition to continuing and escalating blatant violations of human rights, the Lukashenka regime has become complicit in the Russian war against Ukraine. The EU strongly condemned Belarus’ involvement in aggression against Ukraine, calling on Belarus to refrain from such actions and to fulfill its own international obligations, including compliance with the non-proliferation treaty (nuclear weapons – ed.),” he said.
According to him, until now, Belarusian troops are unlikely to be involved in direct hostilities on the territory of Ukraine. However, earlier Minsk, without any basis, accused Ukraine of allegedly “preparing an attack on Belarus.”
Vargei believes that such accusations are aimed at further escalating the security situation in the entire region.
“While Belarusian troops are currently not directly engaged in hostilities, the recent missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian civilians from Belarus are absolutely unacceptable,” the European Commissioner insisted.
He added that the majority of the population of Belarus opposes the country’s active participation in this criminal and brutal war. Vargei believes that Minsk’s involvement in this conflict will have disastrous consequences for the co-aggressor country and its sovereignty.
“We call on the Belarusian authorities to avoid any further involvement of the country in these criminal acts. aggressive war, all those guilty of war crimes will be held accountable,” he summarized.
It should be noted that the Armed Forces of Ukraine believe that the probability of a repeated attack by an aggressor from Belarus is low, but in the spring such a threat may increase significantly.
