The use of loitering ammunition by Russia was intended to cause psychological pressure on the Ukrainians.
The massive attack by kamikaze drones on civilian and critical infrastructure on October 17 was intended to exert psychological pressure on the Ukrainians themselves. It does not affect the course of the battle. This is what the experts of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said in their report.
According to US military analyst Brett Friedman, the payload of a Shahed-136 drone is about three times that of a standard 155mm artillery shell. Thus, five Shahed-136s that hit Kyiv had the effect of 15 artillery shells fired over a very large area.
“Such strikes can cause significant damage to civilian infrastructure and kill and maim many people, without significant military impact. This analysis suggests that Russian forces continue to use aircraft that no Shahed-136 vehicle to create psychological effects associated with targeting civilian areas, instead trying to create asymmetric operational effects by delivering concentrated strikes against legitimate military targets and going forward,” the report said.
It will be remembered that the Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Anna Malyar, explained why it is impossible to photograph downed kamikaze drones.
