Ministry of Defense of Belarus reported this Sunday that he expects to arrive about 9000 Russian military which will form a joint military group State Union of Russia and Belarus in the face of rising tensions with Western-backed neighboring Ukraine.
“The total number (of Russian military personnel) will be slightly less than 9 thousand people,” Valery Revenko, head of the international military cooperation department of the military association, wrote on Twitter.
The representative of the defense recalled that the day before “the first echelons with Russian soldiers, part of the Belarusian-Russian group, began to arrive.”
“The creation of the site will take several days,” he added.
On the same Sunday, the press service of the Ministry of Defense announced the arrival of the first Russian aircraft to join the group.
“The aviation component of the regional group of troops from Russia began to arrive in the Republic of Belarus,” the press service of the Belarusian Defense Ministry said on Telegram.
Military deployment aims to ‘strengthen border security’
Former Deputy Commander of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Belarus, Viktor Tumarit was stated that the decision to use a joint Russian-Belarusian group was aimed at strengthening the protection Ukrainian borderand emphasized that it was a “solely defensive” project.
