Turkey is ready to be the guarantor for Ukraine, but with conditions

Ankara insists that sending Turkish troops to Ukraine in the event of a conflict is out of the question.

Turkey is ready to be Ukraine’s security guarantor, but must first understand what this paper implies. This was announced on Wednesday, April 20, by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in an interview with CNN Turk.

“We cannot be a security guarantee until we understand what it means. Everyone approves security guarantees in 5+1 format,” the Foreign Minister said.

At the same time, he noted that Ankara is opposed to acting as a guarantor following the example of paragraph 5 of the NATO charter on collective defense.

“The United States, Great Britain and Canada have rejected this clause. Of course, Turkey also does not accept it. Sending Turkish troops into the country in case there is a conflict in Ukraine is out of the question. We are trying to understand which one version of the guarantees can be an effective alternative “, says Cavusoglu.

Recall that France is ready to provide Ukraine with the security guarantees demanded by Kyiv in exchange for declaring the country’s neutral status and refusing to join NATO.
