In Finland, parliament has begun debates about joining NATO. This was reported by The Guardian.
According to Prime Minister Sanna Marin, the decision to apply for membership in the Alliance will be made within a few weeks.
It was noted that last week the Finnish deputies received a “white book” commissioned by the government, which assesses the consequences of joining NATO.
The report has no recommendations, but emphasizes that without membership in the Alliance, Finland has no security guarantees.
The report also states that the “deterrent effect” on Finland’s defense is “significantly greater” in the case of NATO membership.
It was noted that about half of the 200 deputies of the Finnish Parliament support joining NATO, against only 12 people.
Recall that Finnish Minister for European Affairs Tytti Tyuppurainen called the country’s accession to NATO “likely”.
It was also reported that Russia threatened Sweden and Finland if they joined NATO.
