The decision to attack Ukraine was made by the President of the Russian Federation, according to media reports, along with the Minister of Defense, the Chief of General Staff and the Secretary of the Security Council.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has made the decision to invade Ukraine in a narrow circle, Bloomberg wrote.
According to interlocutors of the publication from Putin’s entourage, he is determined to continue the war in Ukraine, despite the failure of the plan to quickly seize the country. This is explained by the fact that, in his eyes, the reduction of Moscow’s ambitions would make it “hopelessly weak and vulnerable” before the West.
It was also reported that a few weeks after the start of the war, the circle of Putin’s advisers had further dwindled.
According to media reports, Putin decided to invade Ukraine along with “hawks” such as Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov and Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev.
The publication emphasizes that the limited information Putin received contributed to the Kremlin’s miscalculations. Moscow hopes that in the early days of the offensive it will receive wider support from the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Ukrainian politicians.
The Russian leader also belittled his Ukrainian counterpart, initially considering him weak.
At the same time, the publication wrote that due to growing military losses, Putin’s entourage is already questioning his decision to invade Ukraine.
According to 10 anonymous sources, some members of Putin’s elite circle called the war against Ukraine “a catastrophic mistake that will take the country back to the past for many years.”
At the same time, those close to Putin do not see an opportunity for him to change his course, as well as prospects for internal resistance. Some of them were seriously afraid that he had used nuclear weapons.
Putin, they say, increasingly relies on a dwindling circle of hardline advisers and rejects attempts by others to warn him of the devastating economic and political costs.
In particular, he explained his actions by the fact that although Russia would pay a huge price for the aggression against Ukraine, the West allegedly left him with no other choice. He is also confident that the “economic blitzkrieg” sanctions have failed, and that Russia’s economy is adapting quickly.
Sources say Putin remains confident of strong public support and the Russians are willing to make huge sacrifices for his vision of national greatness.
It should be noted that now Putin said that the reason for the invasion of Ukraine was the decision to “provide assistance to the people of Donbass.”
