About 800,000 more ballots must be processed to announce the final results, but the situation is unlikely to change significantly.
The incumbent President of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen, won the Austrian presidential election by a wide margin on Sunday, October 9th. According to the agency, about 800,000 more mail-in ballots must be processed to announce the final results, but the situation is unlikely to change significantly. The preliminary results correspond to the exit poll of the sociological institute Sora, commissioned by the public legal media company ORF – according to him, Van der Bellen should have obtained 55.5 percent in the elections.
To win the first round, Austria’s presidential candidate needs to get more than 50 percent of the vote. Van der Bellen was re-elected for a second six-year term.
The closest rival is the right-wing populist Rosencrantz
In addition to Van der Bellen, who ran in the election as an independent candidate, six other politicians are running for the position of Austrian head of state. In pre-election polls, Austrian voters favored Van der Bellen. In second place in terms of sympathy is the representative of the right-wing populist Austrian Freedom Party, Walter Rosenkranz. According to SORA’s exit poll on the night of October 9, he eventually won the support of 18.4 percent of voters. All other candidates failed to pass the 10 percent threshold.
So far, all Austrian presidents who have run for a second term have managed to win the election.
6.4 million out of 9 million citizens have the right to vote in Austria. The official voting results in the Presidential elections of the Republic will be announced on October 10. Van der Bellen has been in office since January 2017.
As reported, US President Joe Biden announced his intention to run for a second term. The American presidential election will take place in 2024.
