The United States government announced this Friday a new plan for the Arctic region that emphasizes security and coordination between countries, as well as combating climate change at a time of great tension with Russia, one of the main players in the region.
In a conversation with reporters, the White House indicated that this is the first update of the strategic plan since 2013, when Barack Obama was at the head of the US government, and that it is designed for another ten years.
Without going into details, a senior government official explained that the new plan takes into account “increasing strategic competition” in Arcticexacerbated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s attempts to increase its influence in the region.
“The risk of unwanted escalation”
One of the four main pillars of the new strategy is to strengthen security in the region through coordination with allies USA (including NATO) to jointly protect their Arctic interests, “reducing the risks of unwanted escalation” of a possible conflict with Russia.
They also want to fight the effects of climate change and help protect the environment, especially through collaboration between the government, indigenous peoples, and the state of Alaska.
In turn, it aims to promote sustainable economic development in the region that improves the lives of Alaska’s neighbors by expanding infrastructure, expanding access to services, and supporting emerging sectors of the economy.
Finally, the plan aims to promote cooperation and international governance of the region through organizations such as the Council ArcticDespite the current tensions with Russia.
