Easter Island is located 3500 km from the coast of Chile. It is now closed while a conservation group investigates the extent of the damage.

On Easter Island, a major fire damaged some of the world’s famous statues, while some of them were irreparable. This was reported by the Air Force.

Chile’s deputy minister of cultural heritage said the exact number of stone statues affected by the fire is still unknown.

It is said that on the island there are about a thousand megaliths, known as moai. They have large heads and usually reach a height of about four meters. They were carved by a Polynesian tribe over 500 years ago.

According to Carolina Perez Dattari, an official from the department for the protection of cultural monuments, the fire that broke out on Monday affected almost 60 hectares. At the same time, it was reported that the fire was deliberately started, and its origin is located in the area of the Rano Raraku volcano on Easter Island, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was previously reported that in Northern Greece, archaeologists discovered a 2000-year-old statue of the Roman god Hercules.
