The final details of the EUMAM mission will be agreed in Brussels next week.
As part of the new training mission, the European Union plans to train up to 15,000 Ukrainian servicemen. EU member states have agreed to this working level. Spiegel writes about it.
According to diplomats involved in the talks, 3,000 Ukrainian soldiers should undergo tactical combat training for commanders or courses for engineers.
It was noted that plans for the mission, proposed by EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell at the end of August, should be determined as early as mid-October.
In the past, individual EU countries have trained Ukrainians within the framework of bilateral projects. The Bundeswehr in Germany trained teams for weapons systems provided by Berlin such as the Panzerhaubitze2000 or the Gepard anti-aircraft gun.
If the EU approves the European Union Military Assistance Mission (EUMAM), the activities of individual states will be combined, which will improve coordination.
Some controversy arose on the sidelines regarding the details of mission planning, the newspaper wrote. Poland proposed building a kind of central training camp for Ukrainians near the Ukrainian border. According to the military, the Poles want to train entire combat groups down to the battalion there.
In Germany, it is said that the construction of a large training camp in Poland alone would take time, and that such a camp would have to be carefully guarded against possible espionage by Russian intelligence agencies, as well as possible attacks or sabotage. As evidence, concrete evidence was provided that Russia observed the training of Ukrainian soldiers in Wildflexen with the help of drones.
As a result, a compromise was found in the working level. It is assumed that the Poles will create something like a small headquarters and receive EU funds for it. Separate courses should be organized instead of a central training camp in EU countries.
Germany is already planning its own Bundeswehr training courses. Thus, the army can train Ukrainian commanders in tactics at the combat simulation center, and sappers, doctors and other specialists should also be trained in Germany.
The final details of the EUMAM mission will be agreed in Brussels next week. A decision on the project will be made at the next official meeting of the EU Council on 17 October.
Recall that France, Poland and Germany are ready to help create a special mission to train the Ukrainian military in Europe.
The UK has also reportedly expanded its training program for the Ukrainian military. The training will be held by tens of thousands of fighters.
