Both strings of the main Russian gas pipeline to Europe, Nord Stream, began to leak in three places at the same time, the authorities of European countries suspect the damage.
Russia continues to blackmail Europe with gas on the eve of the start of the warming season. Gas has not been supplied to Europe through the Nord Stream since the summer, and today an accident occurred in the idle, but filled with gas, underwater gas pipelines. Underwater gas pipelines break very rarely, the simultaneous accident of two new pipes in three places at the same time aroused the first suspicion, and then the authorities of European countries were confident that it was not accident
What happened
Danish and Swedish authorities reported gas leaks from two Nord Stream lines near the island of Bornholm on Monday evening. Since underwater gas pipelines break very rarely, the simultaneous failure of two new pipes in three places at once aroused the first suspicion, and then the confidence of the European authorities that it not an accident.
Gas from the damaged Nord Stream pipes will leak within days, or even a whole week, Danish authorities said. Bubbles at the surface of the sea cover an area with a diameter of about 100 meters. Authorities closed a five nautical mile area around the site of the shipping accident.
“Yesterday’s disturbing events with leaks from the same Nord Stream highlight the need to urgently strengthen Europe’s energy security. We must make every effort to deprive Russia of the ability to use energy resources as a instrument of pressure,” Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen said on Tuesday.
Reaction to Russia
On Tuesday, the Kremlin called the underwater gas pipeline accident “a completely unprecedented situation.”
“Today we cannot release an option. In fact, we are talking about some kind of pipe destruction, it is not yet clear what kind,” Russian agencies quoted press secretary Dmitry Peskov as saying. “We are very concerned about this news.”
Ukraine’s reaction
Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the Office of the President, called the incident with a large gas leak in the Nord Stream-1 pipeline a planned Russian terrorist attack.
“The large-scale” gas leak “from SP-1 is nothing more than a terrorist attack planned by Russia and an act of aggression in the direction of the EU. The Russian Federation wants to destabilize the economic situation in Europe and cause panic before winter,” said Podolyak.
The adviser to the head of the Office of the President added that Russia’s best response and investment in security are tanks for Ukraine, especially the Germans.
