President of Argentina Alberto Fernandezassured on Tuesday before the UN General Assembly that the assassination attempt on Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was aimed at “changing democracy” in her country.
“In Argentina, the assassination attempt on the vice president not only affected public peace. It also aimed to change the virtuous collective building that next year will mark four decades of life,” he said, thanking the “solidarity” the country received “from all over the world” after the attack.
Addressing the General Assembly in New York United Nationsin his first face-to-face speech at a global forum, Alberto Fernandez He argued that “many times in history murders were prologues to great tragedies” and “whole nations perished behind these prophets of hatred.”
“I am sure that fascist violence disguised as republicanism will not be able to change the broad consensus held by the vast majority of Argentine society,” the president added, Télam reported.
In this sense, he warned that extremist and violent discourses have found “fertile ground for sowing anti-political sentiment” and neglected that “those who seek to weaken” democracies “have special interests that lead them to promote extreme polarization.”
“Let’s not take this situation lightly. Let’s create a vibrant global rejection of those who contribute to the division of our communities,” said Fernandez.
Ask for a dialogue with the United Kingdom about the Falklands

In this sense, the Argentine President reaffirmed the country’s “legal and inalienable rights of sovereignty” over the Malvinas, South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands and their surrounding maritime areas.
Furthermore, he denounced that the UK had “exacerbated the controversy” with “an unjustified and excessive military presence on the islands” and “calls for the illegal exploitation of resources”. However, he expressed his readiness to resume “negotiations” with London.
