European Union called “unacceptable” the death of a young Kurd, Mahsa Amini, who died shortly after being arrested by Tehran’s vice police for not wearing the hijab or Islamic veil properly.
“What happened to him is unacceptable and those responsible for this murder must be held accountable,” EU foreign affairs spokesman Peter Stano said ahead of his death, sparking protests across the country.
Consequently European Union indicated that it was “extremely important” that the authorities Iran “respect the fundamental rights of their citizens”, while emphasizing that it is also necessary to ensure that “detainees in any form are not subjected to any form of ill-treatment”.
Amini, 22, was arrested in Tehran while she was with her brother for wearing the hijab “incorrectly”. The intervention is attributed to agents of the Orientation Patrol or the Vice Police in charge of enforcing dress standards, which usually results in the arrest of women, although some men have also been arrested.
The young woman was taken to the hospital already in a coma on the day of her arrest after “having suffered a heart attack”, according to the police, and finally died on Friday due to the severity of her injuries.
Protesters and security forces staged another day of unrest on Monday, the third in a row, both in the capital Tehran and in the city of Divandarr in Iranian Kurdistan, where at least eight people were injured.

Tehran police said in a statement that Amini was detained along with other women to receive “explanations and instructions” about the dress code.
“Suddenly, she developed heart problems (…) she was immediately transferred to the hospital. Unfortunately, she died and her body was transferred to the forensic institute,” the authorities explain in the said text.
US calls on Iran to end violence against women
Last Friday, the United States demanded that Iran stop violence against women after young Masha Amini died of a heart attack at a police station where she was detained for not wearing a veil properly.
“Mahsa Amini’s death following injuries sustained while in detention due to a ‘wrong’ hijab is horrifying. Our thoughts are with her family,” State Department Iran Special Representative Robert Malley said on social media.
In the same message, Malli said that “Iran must end the violence against women exercising their fundamental rights” and stressed that “those responsible for her death must be held accountable.”
The 22-year-old was arrested Tuesday afternoon for wearing the veil incorrectly and taken to the police station to participate in a “re-education hour,” according to her family.
