An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 rocked central Mexico on Monday, with two powerful quakes that killed thousands in 1985 and 2017, officials said.
The National Seismological Service said on Twitter that the epicenter was 59 km south of Coalcoman, in the state of Michoacán, on the Pacific coast. SSN initially set a value of 6.8, only to revise it shortly thereafter.
The reaction of the Mexican authorities
“We are about to start collecting information, we sincerely hope that nothing serious has happened,” President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said in the first message from the National Palace.
The phenomenon occurred less than an hour after a nationwide macro exercise organized at 12:19 (17:19 GMT) to commemorate the September 19, 1985 and 2017 earthquakes.
“Emergency protocols have been activated due to the earthquake registered this afternoon in Michoacán. Michoacán Civil Protection remains vigilant,” the government of the state where the epicenter took place tweeted.
While the head of the government of Mexico City, Claudia Scheinbaum, reported that “so far no damage has been recorded in the city”, over which “five condors from the Secretariat of Civil Security of Mexico continue to fly.”
“Perceptible earthquake. Seismic alarm triggered. Condors are flying by. We are in C5. So far no damage has been reported. More information in a few minutes. Earthquake continues, stay calm,” the president of the capital wrote on Twitter.
Other organizations in the south and the Pacific of Mexico, such as Colima and Jalisco, also reported that the quake was noticeable.
A date marked by a national tragedy
Just hours earlier, President López Obrador led a ceremony to commemorate the victims of the September 19, 1985, and 2017 aftershocks.
On September 19, 1985, an earthquake struck at 7:19 local time (12:19 GMT) with a magnitude of 8.1 with its epicenter in the state of Guerrero in the south of the country and claimed the lives of more than 20,000 people. most of them in the Mexican capital.
On the same day, 32 years later, on September 19, 2017, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake with an epicenter between Puebla and Morelos (the center of the country) killed almost 370 people, 228 of them in Mexico City. EFE
