Siophra O’Leary taught law at European universities for many years before being appointed an Irish judge at the ECtHR in 2015.
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has elected Irish judge Shiofra O’Leary as its new head. The press service of the court reported this on Monday, September 19.
O’Leary is noted to be the first female President of the European Court of Human Rights.
Shiofra O’Leary will take office on November 1 this year. He taught law at various European universities for many years before being appointed as an Irish Judge at the ECtHR in 2015.
O’Leary will replace Icelander Roberto Spano, who began presiding over the court on May 18, 2020.
It will be recalled that on September 1, the ECtHR resumed consideration of the complaints against Ukraine, which had been suspended due to the Russian aggression.
And in August, the ECHR ordered Russia to ensure the rights of captured Ukrainian defenders. However, even earlier, the Russian side withdrew from the membership of the European Court and did not recognize its decisions for a long time.
