Buckwheat production this year will be 140-150 thousand tons, while domestic consumption will be 100-110 thousand tons.
For the first time in 10 years, Ukraine will harvest 1.5 times more buckwheat than the domestic consumer needs. This was announced by the First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Taras Vysotsky at a briefing on Monday, September 19.
According to him, almost 60,000 tons have been threshed this year.
“We can expect buckwheat production of about 140-150 thousand tons this year. And domestic consumption is 100-110 thousand, due to the migration of the population and the decrease of consumers. That means, for the first time in the last decade, we can reach 1.5 times more buckwheat production than domestic consumption and become a strategic reserve,” he said.
Over the past five years, 30-40% of buckwheat in Ukraine was imported, Vysotsky said.
It will be remembered that Ukraine lost up to 10 million tons of crops this year due to the occupation of Russian territories.
According to the macro forecast, due to the war, this year’s harvest will fall by 34% and by almost 7% next year, to 45 million tons.
