India refused to buy 48 Mi-17 helicopters from Russia. The official reason is import substitution.
India has refused to buy 48 Mi-17V5 military transport helicopters from Russia, India Today reports, citing government sources.
According to media reports, the decision was not related to the war in Ukraine, but was made before it started – as part of support for the national Make in India program adopted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The decision was made to close the deal. The Air Force will support the program of local medium-lift helicopters,” the ANI source said.
Note that Russia signed a contract with India for the supply of 80 Mi-17 helicopters in June 2011.
It was previously reported that Germany was ready to punish India for not participating in sanctions against the Russian Federation. India abstained from voting for the exclusion of the Russian Federation from the UN Human Rights Council and did not impose sanctions. Meanwhile, a large Indian company IOC refused to buy oil from Russia.
