The UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has information about at least 12 Ukrainians with disabilities who died in boarding schools in the territory occupied by Russian troops.
The Vice-Chairman of the UN Committee on the Rights of People with Disabilities, Jonas Ruskus, said that in the temporarily occupied territories, the Russians are using Ukrainians with disabilities as human shields. He said this at a press conference in Geneva, according to Reuters.
In a special report, the UN said it was “seriously concerned” about the situation of people with disabilities in Ukraine, against which Russia is waging an all-out war.
“Their access to basic rights such as food and an acceptable standard of living, including access to heating in the coming winter months, is at risk,” said Ruskus.
According to him, the Committee has information about at least 12 disabled people who died in a boarding school in the territory occupied by Russian troops.
Ruskus added that disabled people are also known to be “held in inhumane conditions, subjected to poor treatment and used as human shields by the armed forces of the Russian Federation.”
Recall, earlier it was reported that the UN confirmed 14,059 civilian casualties: 5,767 civilians died and 8,292 were injured as a result of the conflict. However, the organization acknowledges that the actual numbers could be higher.
