Parliamentarians from France visited the island as Taipei conducted military exercises.
French parliamentarians arrived in Taiwan on Wednesday, September 7. This was reported by the French television and radio company RFI.
The French delegation’s visit comes at a time when Taiwan is conducting a two-day live-fire exercise on a strategic island located between its coast and China.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry said the delegation of five French parliamentarians was led by Senator Cyril Pellavat. This is the fourth visit of French deputies to the island in a year.
Note that this is the largest delegation of European politicians to visit the island after China’s large-scale military exercises in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.
Taiwan lives under the constant threat of invasion from Beijing, which hates any visits by Western politicians and officials. In particular, in early August, Beijing staged a demonstration of military force in response to US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.
The large-scale exercise involving the Navy and Air Force lasted a week, becoming the largest and most aggressive since the mid-1990s.
It can be remembered that the visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan worsened the relationship between Beijing and Washington. In response, the PRC army conducted a series of military exercises in the Taiwan Strait.
Less than two weeks after the sensational journey, a delegation from the US Congress arrived on the island. The State Department said congressmen have been visiting Taiwan for decades and it does not conflict with the “one China principle.”
