The House Oversight and Reform Committee announced on Thursday that it had reached an agreement to access the financial records of former US President Donald Trump (2017-2021), who refused to release them for years.
The battle over this information dates back to April 2019, when the committee issued a subpoena to access this information as part of an investigation into his “unprecedented” conflicts of interest, transactions “for his own benefit” and his overseas financial ties.
In turn, Trump and Mazars USA, the accounting firm used by the former president and his companies, sued then Democrat committee leader Elijah Cummings in an attempt to block the subpoena.
“After numerous litigation, the committee reached an agreement to obtain key financial documents that former President Trump tried to hide from Congress for years,” the committee said in a statement Thursday.
According to his memo, the documents will make it easier for the committee to “get to the bottom of the egregious behavior” of the former Republican president and ensure that future White House residents “do not abuse their position of power for personal gain.”
In March 2019, the Oversight Committee requested from Mazars USA the financial statements and audits prepared by Donald Trump and some of his companies, including the Trump International Hotel located in downtown Washington, as detailed Washington Post.
Another Trump legal battle
The newspaper pointed out that for more than a decade, Mazars USA and the predecessor firm signed financial statements that Trump used to access the loans, some of which contained “frequent exaggerations or inaccuracies” that were accompanied by a note from the firm saying it did not is responsible for any inaccuracies in the information.
In August 2021, the judge had already indicated that the committee had strong legal grounds for requesting these documents, and the agreement reached now emphasizes that Donald Trump agreed not to file any appeals in the Washington courts and that Mazars USA agrees to submit documents to the committee “as soon as possible”.
The resolution of this conflict will not affect another legal battle between Trump and another committee of the lower house, which for years asked him to release his tax returns.
Donald Trump He was the first U.S. president since Gerald Ford (1974–1977) not to release his tax return each year, a tradition that his predecessors considered part of their duty to be transparent and accountable to the public.
