India commissioned the first aircraft carrier of its own design and construction, Vikrant (translated from Sanskrit – a brave person, a daredevil). The ship was officially accepted into the country’s navy on Friday, September 2.
The commissioning ceremony for the aircraft carrier, which was broadcast live on Indian TV channels, was held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the city of Cochin, in southwestern India.
“Vikrant is big and majestic, Vikrant is special. It’s not just a warship, it’s a testament to India’s hard work, talent and influence in the 21st century… If India decides to do something, then there is no goal it cannot achieve,” the prime minister said.
Vikrant belongs to the class of light aircraft carriers. It has a length of 262 m, a width of 62 m and a displacement of about 45 thousand tons. The ship is equipped with four gas turbines with a total capacity of 88 MW and a maximum speed of 28 knots. Up to 30 planes and helicopters can be put on board. The ship’s crew is about 1,600 people.
Recall that in July in India, the aircraft carrier Vikramaditya caught fire during tests off the coast of Karnataka. The fire was localized by personnel using fire extinguishing systems.
