The body of the bulk carrier received a hole after a collision with a tanker with liquefied gas and fuel oil began to flow into the water.
A bulk carrier collided with a tanker near Gibraltar, not far from Spain. A fuel leak has occurred. The port of Gibraltar is partially closed. This was reported by Reuters.
It was noted that the hull of the bulk carrier OS 35 received a hole after a collision with a tanker with liquefied gas and fuel oil began to flow into the water.
Divers closed two vents on the tanks where the fuel was leaking.
“The Harbor Master has confirmed that the leakage of low sulfur fuel oil from the tank vents is fully contained,” the Gibraltar government said in a statement.
The tanker was not damaged in the collision.
The Port of Gibraltar Authority is reportedly working with a Spanish maritime rescue team to collect some of the fuel oil that leaked outside the perimeter of the boom, which was installed shortly after the collision, as well as to collect the remaining fuel inside the boom Authorities are also ramping up efforts to begin pumping gasoline, diesel and lubricants from the ship.
Gibraltar’s prime minister, Fabian Picardo, told Spanish broadcaster TVE that the operation to remove around 500 tons of fuel from the ship’s tanks should take about 50 hours using the ship’s pumps.
It can be recalled that traffic along the Suez Canal was temporarily blocked after an oil tanker ran aground.
It was earlier reported that a fire on a passenger ferry off the coast of Sweden had been put out.
