Ukraine has been exporting electricity to Europe for two months now and may increase the amount of supplies.
Ukraine can become a “green energy hub” for Europe and increase electricity exports to the European Union. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this on Friday, September 2, speaking via video link at the Ambrosetti international economic forum in Italy.
“Ukraine is ready to increase the export of electricians to the EU. For this, it is important that ZNPP returns to a safe operating mode and remains connected to the Ukrainian energy grid. Russia’s presence in ZNPP significantly weakens our ability to help Europe in the energy sector,” he said.
Due to the export of Ukrainian electricity, it is possible to stabilize the energy consumption of EU countries, which will reduce the energy pressure of the Russian Federation on the whole of Europe, the president insisted.
“Even now, with all the difficulties, we can export such a quantity of electrics that corresponds to at least 8% of the consumption of all Italy,” he said.
According to Zelensky, Ukraine can become a green energy center for Europe, replacing “dirty” Russian energy sources.
“Dirty in different senses of the word: both ecological and moral. Our country has a great natural potential for developing opportunities in green energy and in the production of green hydrogen. It is potentially ten, and possibly hundreds -hundreds of green gigawatts of electric power and million tons of green hydrogen,” said the president.
According to him, Ukraine already has all the necessary infrastructure to deliver electricity and hydrogen to the EU.
“And we have always kept our word in providing Europe with energy resources. Just compare this to the usual behavior of Russia, which always violates agreements and uses the economy for political blackmail, not fulfilling its own promises,” Zelensky summed up.
Note that in two months Ukraine earned 3 billion Hryvnias in electricity exports to Europe.
In Ukraine itself, after the start of the war with Russia, electricity consumption dropped by 30%.
