The Director General of the International Committee of the Red Cross during his visit to the Russian Federation will discuss expanding access to Ukrainian prisoners of war.
The Director General of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Robert Mardini, said that during his visit to the Russian Federation he intends to discuss expanding the organization’s access to Ukrainian prisoners of war. This was stated in his interview with the Interfax-Ukraine agency.
“Yes, I will indeed visit Russia. This plan (the visit – ed.) will take place in approximately two weeks. I will ask about the possibility of meeting with the officials. I intend to discuss issues with humanitarian, in particular access to prisoners of war,” he said.
The ICRC Director General is now in Ukraine and, according to him, has already met with the families of Ukrainian prisoners of war.
“Believe me, they are all anxiously awaiting news about their relatives. My goal is to ask for more access to the prisoners of war and more humanitarian access to the territory that is temporarily out of control of Ukraine,” he said.
In total, since the beginning of Russia’s massive invasion of Ukraine, as Mardini noted in an interview, ICRC personnel have been able to visit several hundred prisoners of war from both sides. Thanks to this, about 3 thousand families of prisoners of war received news about their imprisoned relatives.
Recall that the International Committee of the Red Cross, during the evacuation of defenders from the Azovstal plant, documented the personal data of about 1,800 people. There is no information about the total number of prisoners of war in the organization, as there is no access to most of the prisoners.
In addition, the Red Cross said that they do not guarantee the safety of the Azov people.
