The IAEA intends to establish its permanent representation at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant.

A mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) left Kyiv for the city of Energodar at the Zaporozhye NPP to investigate the situation and establish a permanent mission. This is what IAEA Director General Mariano Grossi said, Ukrinform reported on Wednesday, August 31.

“We are finally leaving after six months of effort. The IAEA is on its way to the Zaporozhye NPP. As you know, we have a very important task there – to work and evaluate the real situation there, to help stabilize the situation as long as ‘t can,” he said at a briefing in Kyiv

Grossi added that the mission plans to spend several days on the station, including talking with the crew, and reporting on the results of the trip. The organization also intends to establish a permanent representation at the station.

In addition, the director general noted that the IAEA is crossing the front for the first time: “We are heading to the war zone, to the occupied territories. This requires clear guarantees not only from Russia, but also from Ukraine. We had a chance to make sure of it.”

The previous day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi in Kyiv.

The IAEA’s mission is expected to focus on three tasks: physical protection, nuclear security, and safeguards against the proliferation of nuclear materials.

As you know, ZNPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Since March 4, it has been captured by the Russian military. The invaders placed military equipment and ammunition on the station, pelting the surrounding area with stones.
