The Ukrainians reminded Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of several social networks, that it was time to solve the problem of artificial bot complaints on Facebook and Instagram.
After the start of the war of Russians in Ukraine, it is very common for citizens who use popular social media accounts to provide information support to Kyiv, block them or delete them.
The former Ukrainian official, as well as the co-founder of the popular financial business Dmitry Dubilet, also drew attention to this.
It is extremely unfair to punish people who react to the war in Ukraine, write about it, while the aggressor country behaves like a barbarian, and this has been proven by dozens of independent media, media, documented real evidence. People cannot react differently to facts,” Dubilet wrote on his Facebook page and gave an example from his personal life.
His wife Julia has an Instagram with about 250,000 followers. 95% of this audience is foreigners (mainly representatives of the creative industries).
Since the beginning of the war, she has been using the account to tell the truth to foreigners. In addition to her civic position, Dubilet’s wife also has personal reasons – she comes from Mariupol, where three of her relatives died.
Every day, due to a complaint from Russian bots, Target blocks Yulia’s posts and sends her to the so-called shadowban. Recently, Julia’s account was closed for the first time and returned a few days later. In early August, the situation repeated itself.
Now, every post or comment Yulia is attacked by bots, and there is a complete impression that her account is about to be closed for the third time – and, as experts say, after that it is no longer possible to restore it. I will add that for Yulia Instagram is not some kind of toy, but an important working tool. Before the war, she used it to create a successful business (and now, because of these constant baths, sales have almost stopped). On the example of Yulia, I want to once again draw the attention of the Target to this situation. Thousands of other Ukrainians (and not only Ukrainians, by the way) found themselves in the same situation,” Dubilet wrote.
In addition to the call to the Meta owner, Dubilet calls to distribute posts with the hashtag #MetaStopBlockUkraine on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, leave reactions and comments for distribution.
At the same time, you can post screenshots of the restrictions that Facebook and Instagram have imposed on your account.
Dubilet believes that the blocking of Ukrainian accounts is due to the excessive activity of Russian bots complaining about publications. With massive complaints from live bots, social media managers can pay attention to the publication and block it.
Part of the content on Facebook and Instagram is blocked due to automatic social media algorithms. The company’s content policy is not adapted to the realities of the war in Ukraine, which is unfolding in social networks in real time.
What should be the message of Meta from Ukrainians? Allocate a separate team of moderators for Ukrainian content and improve the quality of moderation: do not strike users for abusive words about the aggressor country, do not block accounts. The company’s policies should also be adapted to the realities of the war in Ukraine. Social media is designed to tell the truth. And millions of Ukrainians are now doing it on their social media. This is our information front,” Dubilet wrote.
He added that Zuckerberg should forget about “his legless creation goals and solve the damn problem of artificial bot complaints.”
