Bolivian former President of the Left Evo Morales condemned this Monday the theft of his mobile phone during an event of his political party attended by the Minister of the Interior, which caused a stir in Bolivia.
“The theft of my cell phone took place in an act that involved a government minister [Interior, Eduardo del Castillo] and his [personal policial de] security,” Morales wrote on his Twitter account.
He added that “we would not like to think that this is part of a planned attack to harm us.”
Political event of the ruler Movement towards Socialism (MAS) took place on Sunday in the city in the department Santa Cruz (East). He was surrounded by his gunmen and delivered a speech from an impromptu proscenium.
Criticism of a government minister
Morales (2006-2019) previously publicly criticized the activities of the Minister castle and his IAS party asked the President Louis Arc his dismissal, although the president did not uphold the claims.
The former Aymara leader also indicated that he had “nothing to hide”, but that “we will condemn any attempt to use fraud or misrepresentation against us”.
Del Castillo, however, did not comment.
Influential deputy of the IAS, Juanito Englenoted that “this is a cell phone of an important historical leader, a former president, and, of course, there is important information in it.”
He even assured that in the actions of the ruling party “there are infiltrators” from the right and that he suspects that they must have the phone.
The theft of the device prompted complaints from the opposition that the government was sending a number of policemen to investigate the case and search for the cell phone.
Opposition Legislator Jose Carlos Gutierreznoted that “the mobilization taking place on the part of the police in connection with the loss of a cell phone is impressive.”
In his opinion, “the whole demonstration is amazing,” “because it seems that this cell phone is a gold mine to discover all your political and trade union connections.”
Alexander Reyesanother MP from the opposition, believed that “there was no need to mobilize the police due to personal negligence” and that Morales should disclose what information he had to justify why the “national security apparatus” moved by phone.
