President Pedro Castillo received the interim president from his Ecuadorian counterpart Guillermo Lasso on Monday. Andean Community (CAN)a position that he will hold for a year and in which he will seek to “close the gaps”.
“I am honored to be Interim President of the Andean Community. I have the pleasure of passing the baton to the President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, a good friend to whom I wish great success as the new interim president,” Lasso said at a ceremony held at the CAN headquarters in San Isidro.
In a brief act that concluded the XXII meeting of the Andean Presidential Council, Peter’s castle said that it was a “challenge” to take this position”, and argued that it was in the hands of the Peruvians to “open space” for the rest of the bloc, also consisting of Bolivia and Colombia, in addition to Ecuador and Peru.”to be one family.”
Pedro Castillo also thanked his Ecuadorian colleague for his “generosity” in bringing the entire event to our country, as well as for handing over the chairmanship of the summit to him.
“The same spirit of cooperation is needed today more than ever, not only at the level of the Andean subregion, but throughout the international community,” the President said.
Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru are part of the countries that are part of the Andean Community, but since 1976 they no longer have Chile, and Venezuela left in 2011. For this reason, Gustavo Petro called on Chilean President Gabriel Boric to return to the bloc.

“We spoke in particular about the rebirth of the Andean Community (…), which played a very important role in planning the industrialization processes of our countries during the economic thinking of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).” Petro said at a joint press conference after a bilateral meeting with Boric before his arrival in Lima.
The Andean community will continue to meet
The foreign ministers of the four countries that make up the Andean Community (CAN) began a meeting on Monday before the summit of heads of state.
This is not only the first Andean summit of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, but also his first visit abroad as President.
Castillo was unable to attend Petro’s inauguration in Bogota because Congress denied him permission to leave the country in early August.
