The Ukrainian nuclear energy company Energoatom warned today of new Russian attacks at the Zaporizhzhya NPP, when assessing the risk of “radioactive dispersal” in this complex, occupied by Russian troops.
“Over the past 24 hours, Russian troops have bombed the territory of the nuclear power plant in Zaporozhye. We are assessing the damage,” Energoatom said via its Telegram account a day after the station was connected to the city’s power grid. Ukraine.
Earlier, the pro-Russian authorities of this Ukrainian region, for their part, condemned Ukrainian shelling near Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.
Yesterday, Energoatom announced the restoration of the connection of one of its reactors to the Ukrainian power line, followed this Saturday by the resumption of operation of the second reactor.
The plant was completely offline Thursday after a fire was discovered and amid reports of attacks from both sides.
Zelensky calls for IAEA intervention
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last night urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to arrive at the nuclear power plant “as soon as possible” to avoid new risks.
“The situation remains very risky and dangerous. Any repetition of yesterday’s events, that is, any disconnection of the station from the grid, any action by Russia that could provoke a shutdown of the reactors, will once again put the station one step away from disaster,” he said.
Zelensky stressed that his country’s nuclear scientists managed to protect the station “from the worst-case scenario that Russian forces are constantly provoking.”
The mission could reach Ukrainian territory “in the coming days” after IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi confirmed on Thursday from Paris the principle of agreement with Kyiv and Moscow, which opposes the presence of the UN agency is permanent.
