WNBA Players Union President Says Gender Pay Gap Helped Brittney Griner Arrest –

Nneka Ogwumike, head of the WNBA Players’ Union, shared information Tuesday about Britney Greener, a seven -time WNBA All Star who was arrested in Russia in February and remains in custody abroad.

Ogvumike, president of the National Women’s Basketball Association, appeared “Good morning America Tuesday to discuss the league’s efforts to bring Greeneer home.

Greener was arrested in Russia on Feb. 17 – a week before the country invaded Ukraine – after Russian Federal Customs Service officials allegedly found cartridges containing hashish oil in Greener’s luggage.

“It’s scary … we could be it,” said Ogvumike of Greener, a Phoenix Mercury star and two -time Olympic gold medalist. “We really care about your health and safety, especially your mental health. We understand he’s fine with this, but we want his home.”

“We’re BG,” Greener said in his initials. “Our BG.”

Ogvumike also explains why he is now talking about Greener.

“We were deliberately moving and given the nature of the situation in Britain when it happened it was very important for us to deliberately do our best to ensure that we were not compromised on his return home,” he told GMA. Robin Roberts.

“A lot of it has to do with educating yourself about what’s going on in the details,” he continues. “As far as we know. But then to understand how important it is for us to be strategic when and how to talk about it ”.

Ogvumike and Roberts talked about how gender inequality issues have helped Greener with his current predicament.

“It’s frustrating that the issue, whether it’s a gender issue, is now the main issue when it comes to these types of circumstances,” he said. “The truth is it’s there because of a gender problem: inequality of payment.”

According to ABC News, the WNBA’s top paid players earn $ 228,000 per year, while some of the NBA’s top players earn more than $ 1 million.

It’s not unheard of for that WNBA players traveling abroad During the off season to earn extra money. “We’re going there to increase our income,” said Ogvumike, who previously played four years in Russia, two years in China and one year in Poland.
