The Finns are primarily concerned about the reaction to such an intention by neighboring Russia. Today the country’s parliament is discussing the situation.
Finland’s Cabinet of Ministers has sent a report to parliament on the challenges the country may face in the event of a possible NATO accession. On Wednesday, April 13, according to Finnish TV channel YLE.
According to the TV and radio company, along with the benefits that Finland will get from joining NATO, the report also discusses the possible risks, in particular, those associated with the reaction of neighbors, including Russia.
The other day, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said at a press conference that the report did not contain any conclusions or analysis about current political attitudes.
Commenting on the situation, Finnish President Sauli Niiniste said that serious decisions of this kind require scrutiny.
“The publication of the report means the beginning of the parliamentary phase, that is, the report will be discussed in parliament. Now we must define a clear course that Finland will follow,” Niiniste said. He added that it was a matter of Finland’s own security, but it would not hurt anyone.
Earlier, NATO Secretary -General Jens Stoltenberg said Finland and Sweden could rely on NATO membership under an accelerated procedure.
The Federation Council of the Russian Federation said Finland’s possible entry into NATO would make it a target for Russia’s retaliatory measures. And soon after that, heavy weapons, including missile systems, were noticed moving towards Russia’s border with Finland.
