Monkeys can feel their own heartbeats; How can the discovery help depression?

In addition to depression, discovery with monkeys may also help with Alzheimer’s; Understand

By taking the hands to the chest, the human being can feel their own heartbeats, for example. However, this perception is not just ours. A study by the California National Primate Research Center at the University of California, Davis, and the University of London uncovered a curious fact: monkeys can feel your heartbeat.

MONKEY DISCOVERY MAY INFLUENCE TREATMENTS FOR DEPRESSION AND ALZHEIMER’S

“Interoception refers to the ability to sense the body’s internal state, such as noticing when the heart speeds up or breathing speeds up”, the researchers explain. The discoveries about monkeys having the perception of the heartbeat could lead to something much further: Future treatments for depression and Alzheimer’s.

“This model will be used in future translational studies of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s. If we can measure interoception, we can track it as a behavioral biomarker of disease progression.”said the professor at the University of California, Eliza Bliss-Moreauin a statement.

STUDIES WERE DONE WITH RHESUS MONKEYS

The researchers carried out the analysis with the species Rhesus monkeys (mulatto macaque), on what the four animals spent more time observing out-of-rhythm heartbeats. According to scientists, this perception can draw attention to problems in the body. Interoception is extremely important for emotional regulation and mental health in adults.and we still know very little about how it develops in early childhood or develops over evolutionary time”explained the professor in the Department of Psychology at Royal Holloway, Tsakiris brothers.

The sensation of internal body signalslike when your stomach is churning or your heart is pounding, plays a critical role in broad biological and psychological functions ranging from homeostasis to emotional experience and self-awarenessthe researchers highlighted in an article.
