Last year, Russia was Britain’s biggest supplier of petroleum products. As of June 2022, no Russian material has reportedly entered the country.
In June, for the first time, the UK did not import oil from the Russian Federation, as it achieved its goal of stopping the purchase of fuel from this country. Bloomberg reported this.
The British government set its own goals after Russia’s massive invasion of Ukraine.
In the past, UK oil imports reached 499 million pounds per month. It continued until February 2022. Now it has come down to almost zero. This is the first time this has happened since 1997, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Before the massive invasion of Ukraine, Russia was the largest supplier of refined oil to the UK: they imported 24.1% of the product. The Russian Federation also provided 5.9% of crude oil imports and 4.9% of gas imports.
After the invasion, the UK decided to gradually stop importing oil and gas from Russia and start looking for alternatives. They are Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, Belgium and Kuwait – they partially compensated for the reduction in imports from Russia.
So far, imports from Russia to the UK have reached 33 million pounds, which is 97% less than last year’s average.
Earlier, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke out against attempts by some foreign leaders to save face for Russian President Vladimir Putin. He believes that now is not the time to negotiate with the aggressor country Russia, which has occupied part of the territory of Ukraine.
