Despite Gazprom’s refusal to accept the Siemens turbine, Canada plans to return the remaining turbines to Germany.
Canada still plans to restore the five turbines for Nord Stream, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said in an interview with CBC on Wednesday, August 24. Ottawa followed this decision, despite the fact that Gazprom had previously when it refused to accept a Siemens turbine, which had already been returned to Germany.
“This is exactly what Germany is asking us to do,” Joly said.
In July, Canadian authorities gave permission to send a turbine, which underwent maintenance in Montreal, back to Germany for transfer to Gazprom. However, the Russian state-owned company refused to accept it, citing technical problems.
The Canadian government called the return of the turbines a necessary step to secure gas supplies to Germany. Ottawa also maintains that the Kremlin will use Canada’s refusal to return the turbine to shift the blame for Europe’s energy shortages to sanctions against Russia.
“Canada does not want to give Putin any reason to use the energy flow to Europe as a weapon,” Joly said. In this regard, Ukraine criticizes Canada’s decision and calls for it to be reconsidered.
The Russian concern Gazprom in June reduced gas supplies through Nord Stream 1, citing the lack of a turbine, which, along with other equipment, creates pressure to pump fuel. This turbine was repaired in Canada in June and has been in sealed condition in Germany since mid-July, awaiting shipment to the Russian Federation. Gazprom complains about the lack of information about the arrangement, Siemens Energy rejects these claims.
It will be recalled that on August 3, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz personally inspected the turbine for the SP-1. He assured that the unit is ready for use, and all that is needed is a request from Russia.
