Rescue services on Sunday found four bodies of pilgrims stuck under the rubble of a Shiite temple in central Iraq, part of which collapsed the day before as a result of a landslide.
“We found four bodies, including the body of a woman,” General Abdelrahman Javdat, director of the civil defense press office, told AFP, stressing that rescue operations are still ongoing.
Six to eight pilgrims were trapped under the rubble of the shrine, located in the province of Karbala and known as Qattarat al-Imam Ali, civil defense spokesman Nawas Sabah Shaker said earlier.
The emergency services also said that three children were rescued and are now hospitalized, although they are in “good health”.
Part of the rock surrounding the building broke away on Saturday afternoon “due to high humidity” and fell on the building, Shaker said. As a result of the landslide, “about 30% of the total area of the building, which is about 100 square meters,” collapsed, he explained.
Rescuers said they were able to deliver oxygen, food and water to trapped people, state news agency INA reported. They also said they were in verbal contact with the victims “to calm them down”.

Rescuers don’t rest
“We are working diligently and with the utmost precision to reach the trapped people. Any mistake could lead to new landslides,” Javdat told AFP.
Basem Jazali, who was present at the rescue, said his nephew was trapped “when the roof collapsed.”
“I am afraid that all the efforts made will be in vain (…). We want to know what happened, why it happened,” he added.
According to an AFP correspondent, on Sunday bulldozers tried to remove the rubble.
Both outside and inside the building, police, army and Hashd al-Shaabi fighters, former paramilitaries integrated into Iraqi armed forcesThey guarded this place.
In a tweet, Iraqi President Barham Saleh called on the “heroic” rescuers to “mobilize all their efforts to save the trapped people.”

historical shrine
The mausoleum is located about 25 km west of the Shiite holy city of Karbala and attracts thousands of pilgrims every year.
Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, is buried in the holy city of Karbala.
Shiites regard Hussein, who died in battle in 680 AD, as the rightful successor to the Prophet Muhammad, and this issue is at the heart of the split with Sunni Islam.
Instead, the mausoleum is dedicated to Imam Ali, the son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad and the founder of Shia Islam.
According to Shia tradition, Imam Ali made a stop at this place with his army on his way to the Battle of Siffin in 657 and created a source of water there. (AFP)
