Cuban Ministry of Health (MINSAP) confirms first case monkeypox in the country with an Italian tourist who is very serious.
The man is in critical condition, his life is in danger, MINSAP in a press release put together by Granma.
italian tourist arrived in the country on August 15 and visited several places in the provinces of western Cuba. Two days later, he developed symptoms of the disease, and the next day he contacted the health service due to their persistence.
During the first medical aid, the symptoms worsened, which required an urgent transfer to hospital and intensive treatment, admission to the hospital with a cardiorespiratory arrest, from which he recovered, although he is still in intensive care.
“The epidemiological investigation is being deepened and focal control measures are being carried out, as provided for in the approved protocol to combat this disease in the country,” the report says.
For its part, WHO noted that several studies are currently underway trying to determine whether genetic changes in the monkeypox virus are causing the rapid spread of the disease.
Two separate clades or variants of the virus have been named the Congo Basin (Central Africa) clade and the West African clade after the two regions to which they are endemic.
WHO has changed the name of the groups to clade I and clade II, respectively, to avoid the risk of geographic stigmatization.
He also announced that clade II has two subclades, IIa and IIb, with viruses within the latter identified as being responsible for the current global outbreak.
Outbreaks of monkeypox infections began to be reported in May outside endemic countries in Africa. WHO Declared it an international public health emergency on July 23.
Brazil approves vaccine imports
Brazil’s National Sanitary Inspection Agency (Anvisa) has allowed, on an “exceptional and temporary basis,” the importation of monkeypox vaccines and medicines that have not yet been registered in the country.
The collegiate leadership of the regulatory body unanimously decided to approve the rule to “accelerate public access to vaccines and medicines” against monkeypox, for which, according to the latest bulletin of the Ministry of Health, there were 3450 confirmed cases and 4491 confirmed analyzes as of August 18.
Officially, a death was recorded in the South American country, which occurred at the end of July and became at that time the first outside the African continent.
