Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would ask his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to “do everything possible” to prevent an accident at the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporozhye, occupied by Russian troops and subjected to shelling. that Ukraine and Russia blame each other.

Erdogan indicated that he would make this request to Vladimir Putin at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelinsky, whom he met yesterday in the Ukrainian city of Lvov.

“Zelensky specifically asked us for Russia to dismantle there (in Zaporozhye) all mines and bases so that it quickly ceases to cause alarm, because now this is an element of threat,” Erdogan told Turkish journalists who accompanied him on the return flight from Ukraine.

Yesterday, Erdogan held a trilateral meeting in Lviv with Zelensky and UN Secretary General António Guterres, after which he read out a statement warning of the danger of a nuclear incident in Zaporozhye.

“When I said, ‘We don’t want a new Chernobyl,’ I meant it,” he now explained in a press interview compiled by Turkey’s Anadolu news agency.

I will discuss this issue with Vladimir PutinI will especially ask Russia to contribute to this issue in order to take a step towards world peace,” the Turkish President added.
