Member of the Islamic State cellISISby its English acronym), known as the Beatles, was sentenced this Friday to life in prison by a court in USA for the deaths of four American hostages in Syria.
El Shafi ElsheikhThe 34-year-old received eight simultaneous life sentences after being convicted in April of hostage-taking, conspiracy to kill US citizens and supporting a terrorist organization.
Court in Alexandria, near Washington, tried El Shafi Elsheikh for his role in the deaths of journalists James Foley and Stephen Sotloff and aid workers Peter Kassig and Kayla Mueller.
Federal Judge T.S. Ellis stated that Elsheikh’s behavior “can only be described as horrendous, barbaric, cruel, insensitive and, of course, criminal” at sentencing.
The convict showed no visible reaction upon hearing the verdict.
Diane Foley, mother of James Foley, said in a court filing Friday, referring to Elsheikh: “His hate crimes have not won… He is being held accountable for his depravity.”
“Love is much stronger than hate. I pity you for choosing hate.”
Detention
El Shafi Elsheikh and another former Beatles, Alexandra Amon Koteywere captured by Kurdish militias in Syria in January 2018 and handed over to US forces in Iraq.
In 2020, they were transferred to the United States to face trial.

Another alleged Beatles Ayn DavisThe 38-year-old was deported to the UK from Turkey and is in pre-trial detention on terrorism charges.
