The use of chemical weapons is a crime and a violation of the Convention, which Russia has also signed.
The EU said it was monitoring information about the possible use of Russia’s chemical weapons in Mariupol and reminded Moscow that its use was a war crime. The corresponding statement on Tuesday, April 12, was made by the press secretary of the European Commission for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Nabila Massrali.
“We have seen media reports about the possible use of chemical weapons by Russian troops in Mariupol after the Ukrainian military showed signs of chemical poisoning. We are closely monitoring the situation,” Massrali said.
He stressed that the use of chemical weapons, including toxic chemicals as weapons, in any condition is a violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which Russia has also signed.
“It is also a war crime and a serious violation of international humanitarian law. It is completely unacceptable and poses a threat to all of us,” the spokesman said, adding that those responsible for the use of the chemicals as weapons are liable.
Recall, on the eve of the Azov regiment said that Russian troops dropped a poisonous substance of unknown origin from a drone in Mariupol.
Earlier, the “DPR” proposed to use chemical weapons against the Ukrainian military in Azovstal.
