On Monday, a group of lawyers and journalists filed a complaint with INC and its then director, Mike Pompeowhom they accuse of having spied on their conversations during visits to the founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assangewhile he was in hiding at the Ecuadorian embassy in London.
“We filed a lawsuit on behalf of several people who came to the Ecuadorian embassy to visit Julian Assange, and, without their knowledge, all their teams were photographed and their conversations recorded company under the leadership of Mike Pompeo,” he said at a press conference. Richard Rothone of the Australian lawyers.
The 51-year-old activist remains in a strict regime colony in swampin London while his appeal against extradition to the United States is pending.
illegal wiretapping
US authorities charge an Australian with about twenty crimes for information and documents that he leaked on his WikiLeaks portalin which he exposed the abuses committed by US forces during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Between 2012 and 2019, Assange took refuge in Embassy of Ecuador in Londonuntil, in April of that year, he was arrested under an extradition order from the United States, after the government of that Latin American country withdrew his political asylum status.
It was there that the alleged wiretapping took place, in which the Spanish company was allegedly involved, Global undercover responsible for the personal security of the embassy. The company and its owner, David Moralesare also listed as defendants.
As explained on Monday Deborah Kerbeckone of the plaintiffs made several trips to the embassy “to discuss sensitive legal issues”.
“Upon arrival it was strict protocol to protect Julian. We were asked to hand over passports, cell phones, cameras, laptops, recording devices and other electronic equipment to the guards in the lobby.”
It was at this time, as we later learned, that they allegedly “dismantled our phones, removed and photographed SIM cards, and downloaded data from our electronic equipment,” he added.
The lawsuit was filed this morning in the Southern District of New York and alleges that Pompeo oversaw and directed “extraordinary espionage campaign illegal for Assange’s lawyers and other embassy staff.”
“Pompeo not only led the effort, but his agents, with the help of Sheldon Adelson’s security team, also hired David Morales, then CEO of UC Global, to implement the violations,” the plaintiffs say. (EFE)
