A high-ranking Taliban dignitary known for his diatribes against the jihadist group “Islamic State” (ISISby abbreviation in English), died Thursday at Kabul with his brother in a suicide attack.
Rahimula Haqqaniwho recently spoke out for the right of Afghan girls to go to school, escaped at least two assassination attempts, including one in Pakistan in October 2020.
” Madrasah [escuela musulmana de estudios superiores] Sheikh Rahimula was attacked and he and his brother were martyred,” he told reporters. AFP This was stated by the representative of the police of Kabul Khalid Zadran.
He added that three more people were injured in the explosion.
Afghan government spokesman Bilal Karimi confirmed the leader’s death “as a result of an attack carried out by a cowardly enemy.”
ISIS claims to have attacked
ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement quoted by SITE Intelligence Group, an organization that monitors websites of Islamist groups.
The statement said the kamikaze “managed to infiltrate the office of one of the Taliban’s most prominent defenders and one of the main instigators of the fight” against ISIS, detonating “his explosive vest.”
Rahimula Haqqaniwho currently holds no position in the Taliban regime, has vehemently criticized ISIS, which has carried out several attacks since the return of the Afghan Taliban to power a year ago.
In recent months, she has spoken out in favor of girls’ right to go to school. (AFP)
