A panel of global experts convened by the World Health Organization (WHO) has agreed on new names for the variants of the virus monkeypoxas part of an ongoing effort to harmonize the names of the disease, virus and their variations.
Scholars have agreed to call the variants Roman numerals. They thus reached a consensus to now refer to the old Congo Basin (Central Africa) variant as one (I) and the old West African variant as two (II). In addition, it was decided that clade (variant) II consists of two subclades.
So the new naming convention for monkeypox it includes clade I, clade IIa and clade IIb, the latter primarily being among the group of variants actively circulating during the current (2022) global outbreak.
The monkeypox virus was named after its first discovery in 1958, before modern advanced disease and virus naming techniques were adopted. The same goes for the name of the disease it causes.
“Modern best practice is that newly identified viruses, related diseases and virus variants should be given names in order to avoid offending any cultural, social, national, regional, occupational or ethnic group and to minimize any negative impact on trade, travel, tourism. or animal welfare,” says WHO in a note.
Assigning new names to existing diseases is the responsibility of WHO in accordance with the International Classification of Diseases and the WHO Family of International Classifications Related to Health (WHO-FIC). WHO is holding an open consultation on a new name for the monkeypox disease.
On the other hand, the naming of virus species is the responsibility of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), which continues the naming process for monkeypox virus.
The WHO notes that the new variant names should take effect “immediately” while work continues on disease and virus names. Meanwhile, the naming of the pedigrees will be suggested by scientists as the outbreak develops. Experts will be reconvened as needed.
US: Government declares public health emergency
The United States government has declared a public health emergency over an outbreak of monkeypox in a country that has already recorded thousands of infections. No deaths have been recorded yet.
“We are ready to take our response to the next level,” U.S. Health Secretary Xavier Becerra explained in press statements Thursday.
The declaration will allow national agencies in the United States to access emergency funds and make it easier to manage vaccines and treatments for the disease. It will also help raise the awareness and information that authorities say is necessary to contain the infections that are spreading rapidly in the country.
