Russian journalist Marina Ovsyannikova, who became famous for interrupting a state-run news channel in her country with a poster against Russia’s offensive in Ukraine, was arrested on Wednesday for “discrediting” the army, her lawyer said.
“We are with investigators at the moment. An investigation has been launched into Ovsyannikova for “spreading false information” about the Russian army, lawyer Dmitry Zayvatov told AFP. “She was arrested,” he said.
Now researchers must decide Ovsyannikovawho has two children, will be placed in custody or released pending trial, according to the same source.
From the end of July Ovsyannikova was sentenced to pay two fines for “discrediting” the Russian army, especially in social media posts critical of the offensive in Ukraine.
The two verdicts, less than six months apart, paved the way for a criminal case with potentially far more serious legal implications.
Who is Marina Ovsyannikova?
Ovsyannikova rose to prominence in mid-March after appearing on a pro-Kremlin news network where he worked with a banner denouncing the offensive in Ukraine and “propaganda” of government-controlled media.
Images of this gesture went around the world. Many people praised his bravery amid Russia’s crackdown on critical voices.
While many admire his bravery, there are those among the Russian opposition who chide him for his past as a pro-government channel, Channel One.
After working abroad for several months, notably for the German newspaper die Welt, he announced in early July that he had returned to Russia to settle a custody dispute over his two children.
Since its inception in Ukraine in February, Russia significantly toughened its criminal arsenal against those who condemn the authorities.
