The Mexican government said on Tuesday that it will drill 5 new wells to extract water from a collapsed coal mine in Sabinas, Coahuila, in the north of the country, where 10 miners They were trapped for almost a week.
“Currently, work is underway on two wells in operation with a pumping capacity of 100 hp. and three more (more wells) are in the process of being discovered. It is also planned to drill five more wells,” said the National Civil Protection Coordinator MexicoLaura Velazquez, via videoconference from the spot.
Velázquez said that 134 hours of uninterrupted work has been completed since the collapse of this coal mine was recorded last Wednesday, until conditions are created for the entry of search and rescue authorities.
At his daily conference at the National Palace, the President MexicoAndrés Manuel López Obrador, explained that the collapse occurred as a result of perforation of the wall, which contained a large amount of water that flooded the mine.

“It is assumed that in the works (miners) that were carried out (in the Sabinas mine), a wall was broken, which accumulated a lot of water and flooded the coal wells,” he said.
He added that five miners who, safe outside the mine, “fortunately managed to get out, almost driven out by the same flood”.
They will use an underwater drone
According to Civil Protection data, the average production is 328 liters per second, while it is specified that 10.4 cubic meters of water remained to be extracted from the second well, 11.3 meters from the third, and 16.4 meters from the fourth. Well.
“We will focus on lowering these water levels with the idea that we will be able to enter the underwater drone again and obviously the rescuers will be able to enter,” Velasquez added.

In addition, he explained that there are 603 military and civilian personnel at the northern Sabina mine who are drilling, pumping water and rescue work.
López Obrador also expressed his gratitude to everyone who is working to rescue the 10 stranded miners.
The collapse of the mine, from which only five workers managed to escape, although they were injured, recalls the tragic accidents that occurred in Mexico in recent years.
According to the Pasta de Conchos family, which unites relatives miners was killed in the 2006 collapse of a mine of that name, also in Coahuila, since then more than 100 people involved in mining in this coal zone have died.
