“It is painful to see that since then the people of Belarus have been subjected to systematic repression in its worst form,” the document said.
It is indicated that the current “regime suppresses the expression of any critical voices” at a time when the formal leader of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko “sold most of the sovereignty of his country to the sponsors of the Kremlin” – as a result , Belarus is becoming more and more like a “Russian military zone, acting as an accomplice in the Kremlin’s terrible aggressive war against Ukraine – all this against the will of the Belarusian people.”
“Recent events show that the fight against the illegitimate, dangerous regime of Lukashenka is not only an internal concern of Belarusians: it is also our concern, as it poses a clear threat to our entire continent,” the statement read.
As examples, MEPs cited the migration crisis at Belarus’ border with EU countries and the forced landing of a Ryanair aircraft in Minsk.
It is also indicated that there are about 1,300 political prisoners in Belarus today, some of whom were imprisoned as minors. There are currently 30 journalists in prison. About 900 non-governmental organizations, as well as independent trade unions, have been liquidated or are in the process of being liquidated, and 60 lawyers have had their licenses revoked.
The European Parliament calls on the Belarusian authorities to “immediately and unconditionally release and drop all charges against all political prisoners and persons subject to arbitrary detention, and demands an immediate cessation of violence and repression .”
The MEPs also called on the international community “to show firmness in the implementation of sanctions against the illegitimate Lukashenka regime,” because “the brave people of Belarus are part of our European family.”
It was previously reported that in Belarus a Polish journalist was sentenced to five years in prison. Irina Slaunikova is accused of “creating an extremist formation.” The closed process took more than a month.
