At least 17 firefighters have gone missing while trying to put out the fire. Fire as a result of the explosion of a fuel tank in Matanzas (western part of Cuba), the presidential administration announced on Saturday.
The island’s government has requested international assistance and advice with experience in dealing with the oil problem while the flames continue.
At the moment, there are 67 injured: 3 in critical condition, 3 in very serious condition, 12 in serious condition, 20 in less serious condition and 29 in light condition.
The affected 50,000 cubic meter crude oil deposits are located in a supertanker base in the industrial area of Matanzas, close to the Antonio Guiteras thermal power plant, one of the largest in Cuba.
