A full-scale Russian invasion does not carry the risk of suspending the visa-free regime between Ukraine and the European Union. This was said by the European Commissioner for Internal Affairs, Ylva Johansson, in an interview for European Truth, published on Thursday, August 4.
In particular, the journalist asked the European Commissioner if there is a threat to suspend the visa-free regime, because due to the war, Ukraine may have reached some indicators that allow raising this issue.
“I don’t see any danger to stop the visa-free regime. Moreover, we already have a unanimous decision of the Council of the EU that Ukraine will be a candidate state. We are helping Ukraine in joining the EU, and I don’t see the danger that as a result of the war there will be any threat of visa liberalization for Ukraine,” said Johansson.
He confirmed that the European Commission is aware of cases when Ukrainian women, after traveling home to Ukraine, had problems returning to the country where they had received temporary protection. At the same time, the documents issued by some countries have become insufficient for border guards and travel within the EU.
According to Johansson, the EC is determined to solve these problems, and is now collecting information. In general, the rules provide that Ukrainians are entitled to both short and long trips home with the opportunity to return to Europe.
Recall that refugees from Ukraine received the right to cross EU borders using the Diia.pl electronic document. It allows movement within the Schengen area for 90 days in any 180 day period.
