United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced the creation of a group that will try to establish the cause of the tragedy in Yelenovka.
The United Nations (UN) plans to launch a mission that should “establish the facts” of the deaths of several dozen Ukrainian prisoners of war in Yelenovka. This is what UN Secretary General António Guterres said in a press conference on Wednesday, August 3.
“We received requests from the Russian Federation and requests from Ukraine to conduct an investigation into the events (in Yelenovka – ed.). I decided, in accordance with my ability and authority, to launch a fact-finding mission . I don’t have the authority to conduct criminal investigations, but I can launch a fact-finding mission,” he said.
According to him, the facts established by the mission will be given to the governments of Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
“I hope we can agree on the terms of reference for this mission. We are looking for competent, independent people … And we hope to have every opportunity on both sides to access all the data that is necessary to know the truth about what happened. It is a question that we approach it seriously. And we are working on it,” Guterres summed up.
Remember, on July 29, the “DNR” said that 47 people were killed in the shelling of the colony, 75 were injured, including eight guards.
In this regard, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the armed forces of the Russian Federation carried out targeted deliberate shelling of the correctional institution in Yelenovka, and the statements about the alleged’ y shelling from the Ukrainian side is a blatant lie and a provocation.
Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmitry Lubinets said that Ukraine did not receive a signal from the UN on the terrorist attack in Yelenovka, where there was a massacre of Ukrainian prisoners of war.
