Since 2022, France, Belgium and Spain have spent 34 billion euros in Russian lng, and 21.2 billion euros with the help of Ukraine.
France, Belgium and Spain have spent more than Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) than financial assistance in Ukraine. From 2022 to June 2025, these three countries spent 34.3 billion euro on purchasing LNG. Meanwhile, their total support of Ukraine reached 21.2 billion euros. This has been confirmed by the Greenpeace report.
According to the organization, in the first half of 2025, the EU imported 12.8 billion cubic meters of Russian lng – 67% more compared to the same period of 2021, throughout Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.
Until February 2022, Russia’s gas, including the pipeline and LNG, provided about 45% of European needs for energy. After the EU invasion, he began to actively reduce the hope of Russian energy sources.
The European Commission offered to completely stop importing all Russian fuel types in 2027. Most EU countries supported the initiative, but Slovakia and Hungary opposed.
In the 19th package of sanctions against Russia, which has not been approved by the EU countries, it has been proposed to ban Russian importation until the end of 2026. It was one year earlier than initial plans, and the initiative was associated with pressure from the USA and Donald Trump.
To reduce hope in Russia, the EU plans to increase LNG acquisition in the United States. In 2021, part of American gas was 28% of EU imports, and by 2024 it increased to 45%.
Most of the LNG came to Europe from Russian company Yamal Lng. From 2022 to 2024, the company increased the revenue of 34 billion euros and paid nearly 8 billion euros of Russian budget taxes.
Greenpeace’s note that for this amount could buy Russia a 270 thousand shahed drone.
As you know, the European Union refused to introduce the ban on importing Russia’s natural liquid gas to future penalties.
