US Department of Justice summons ex-lawyer to testify White HousePat Cipollone, who fought against then-President Donald Trump’s attempts to change the outcome of the 2020 election.
As the New York Times and CNN reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed sources, Cipollone and his lawyers have already discussed whether to appear before a jury.
Cipollone testified behind closed doors before a legislative committee investigating the attack on Capitol January 6, 2021 in an interview that was videotaped and transcribed. Case not yet closed USA.
The lawyer has witnessed key moments in Trump’s efforts to invalidate the results of the November 2020 election won by Democrat Joe Biden, such as discussions about the possible hijacking of vote-tallying machines.
He was also present in the West Wing of the White House in January 2021 when a crowd of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol during a joint session of the two houses of Congress to support Biden’s election victory.
Last month, the committee ruled out that Trump was manipulated into ignoring his closest advisers and believing there was electoral fraud.
Lawmaker Liz Cheney, one of two Republicans on the committee who oppose the former president, wrecked that defense strategy, which she believes arose from a wealth of evidence provided by her inner circle that told her that the 2020 president was not stolen.
“Trump is a 76-year-old man, not an impressionable child, and, like everyone in this country, he must be held accountable for his actions and decisions. He had access to more detailed and specific information that showed that the election was not a robbery,” Cheney said.
The man who participated in the storming of the Capitol, sentenced
A member of a far-right paramilitary group was sentenced to seven years in prison for the attack on the United States Capitol, becoming the first person to receive a post-trial conviction for the attack.
A federal judge in the District of Columbia, home of the US capital Washington, has sentenced Guy Refitt, a protester who carried a firearm during the January 6, 2021 assault and a member of the far-right Three Percent group.
The seven-year, three-month sentence is the longest sentence handed down to a person involved in the date when a mob of demonstrators, supporters of then-President Donald Trump, broke into Congressional headquarters to try to stop the ratification of Joe Biden’s election victory.
